My students are energetic and eager to learn in a 21st century language arts classroom where collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking skills are necessary to learn and grow. Some, however, have adverse childhood experiences in their backgrounds, which may result in behaviors such as hyperactivity or acting out. As a trauma sensitive school, we seek to give students what they need to help them release their energy and self regulate within the classroom. Students learn strategies to help them manage their own behaviors - excitement, anxiety, and frustration. I am hopeful flexible seating options, wiggle cushions, and tactile sensory tools will allow students the freedom to move about appropriately while remaining engaged and on task. Even students without adverse experiences in their background can be challenged by stress and frustration, and would benefit from the use of these tools.
Students will be able to utilize flexible seating options and tools to meet sensory needs and regulate behaviors while engaging in 21st century classroom activities.
In doing so, students will feel safe and secure to learn and grow.
My Project
Students will have the choice to use flexible seating options and sensory tools as they engage in classroom activities and complete tasks.
These items will assist students in implementing the skills they have learned in the Second Steps program to manage both emotions and behaviors as they work within the classroom.
The addition of wiggle cushions, wobble stools, and bean bags will give students flexible seating options, while at the same time providing the opportunity to move about while working. Giving students the option to use sensory items like fidgets can help them focus or manage anxious behaviors as they work, grow, and learn.
