As a special education resource teacher, I support a population of elementary students with varying educational disabilities. The students have social/self-regulation and executive functioning impairments in addition to academic concerns.
In our classroom, movement is necessary throughout the day to help students get their wiggles out and focus while learning.
All students deserve a positive learning experience. Incorporating movement into our day to day activities has proven to assist students in their self-regulation which enhances their ability to concentrate and be successful not only academically but also in their social interactions.
My Project
Sitting in a chair the majority of the day isn’t an easy task, especially for students who have a difficult time focusing and keeping their bodies calm. I am asking for flexible seating options and movement opportunities so that my students can work and learn in a way that works best for them.
My goal is to create a classroom community that promotes active engagement for all students.
Students enjoy movement while they work, which is why I have asked for wiggle cushions, Bilibo seats, and ball chairs. I have also asked for stools and yoga mats to accommodate those students who prefer just sitting at their desk or on the floor. A balance board would provide an opportunity for classroom movement while peers are working quietly.
The flexible seating options and tools for incorporating movement into learning will provide students with an outlet for their energy, which will help with student engagement and their ability to focus and learn.
