Ms. Breitenbach from Orange NJ is requesting flexible seating through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
Help me give my students the seating and supplies that they'll need this year!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students are very motivated and love to apply their learning to the real world! They are always curious as to how a book we're reading or an article can relate to their lives, therefore they want to focus on things that they can relate to. This makes my job all the more interesting because I am constantly trying to create new tasks and ways to challenge them.
Not only does my class want to find solutions to the problems the characters face in the books that we read, but to their own personal problems as well.
Being in an urban area and teaching all inclusion classes, my students are constantly having curveballs thrown at them. Whether it's Atticus Finch trying to tackle racism in Maycomb County or Hà living through the Vietnam War, they find a way to bring it back to our classroom and tie it into their own lives. They love to think outside of the box and find a solution to any problem, including their own.
These supplies will help us complete the flexible seating portion of our 8th Grade Language Arts Inclusion classroom. Since my school is in an urban area, we have been working diligently to gather the supplies that our students need in order for them to be confident, comfortable, and captured in our day-to-day learning activities. Giving the students a variation of seating allows for them to think critically, make their own choices, and take ownership of their education.
According to an Edutopia article, creating flexibility in the physical characteristics of a classroom environment can improve academic performance in reading, writing, and mathematics by approximately 16 percent.
With these supplies, my students will be able to be autonomous learners and express themselves through their choices in seating, music, and learning activities.
Being an inclusion classroom, we have learners of all different backgrounds and abilities. Since the student demographics in our classroom is diverse, the choices that they can make in terms of their learning and the classroom's physical environment should be just as varied. Between listening to current music to relate back to our studied literature, or moving around in small groups with the assorted seating options, students will be able to have a new experience each and every day.
The donations to this project will help me provide more choice in each student's learning and enhance their overall academic experience this academic year.
