Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
What I love most about my students is that despite facing obstacles coming from a low income background, they work hard to reach their learning goals. My fifth graders range from ages 10-11 years old. Although they are young, they understand the importance of educating themselves and what it takes. They are motivated even though they don't have the shiniest or newest resources available to them at home or even in their classrooms.
My students know where they come from, but they don't allow the odds to limit how they learn and who they are.
I've seen what my students can accomplish without a legitimate pencil or glue stick. I know they can achieve greater with those things and more.
Because of my students' pure dedication, I wish to never let one go without the basic tools necessary and I hope to promote a learning environment they feel excited to be a part of.
My Project
I looked back on the small thoughts I had during the year about what could make a big impact for the betterment of my students' learning. I wanted to start off simple by supplying the students with basic classroom needs.
Not having things like pencils, glue sticks, and efficient scissors throughout the year can really drive the functionality of a class in an unfavorable direction.
Students have these things at the beginning of the school year when they walk in on the first day with their bags of fresh supplies. However, I've sadly witnessed that it's just not the case for everyone at the start of the year or most students as the seasons change. I think of students with a pencil as the equivalent of mechanics with their tools. Gotta have 'em so I am asking for pencils, notebooks and glue to help all students have what they need to succeed.
The flexible seating took this project to the next level for me. With the basic needs of the classroom being met, students can truly be excited for the wow-features of a classroom. When I tell people I teach 5th grade, they fascinate over the students' maturity level of still being a child. I agree that it's one of my favorite things about fifth graders; however, these children still love to be kids. They are motivated by sitting in the fun seat and having their turn at the special chair for the day. My vision with the couch and chair is to bring enthusiasm to learning.
Lastly, I included the electricity activity since the materials I have are breaking and not all groups get working equipment. My students LOVE lab day and it's disappointing when they can't all participate due to lack of equipment.
This combination of functional and flexible is the duo that will allow my students to not only meet their learning goals but exceed them.
