Flexible Seating and Books on Tape Makes 1st Grade Great!
My students need flexible seating to help with movement throughout their learning day. They also need a listening center so they can hear books that model enjoyable, fluent reading.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are sweet, energetic first graders who come from low-income and single parent homes. They are always quick to give a smile, a hug, or help a friend. They enjoy learning together and love to listen to stories being read aloud to them. They also love to dance and move around.
Our classroom philosophy is that we are a family and our classroom is our second home.
The students subscribe to this idea of home and do their best to treat each other with kindness and use class materials properly. They are great at sharing learning resources.
My Project
My students enjoy listening to stories. A listening center would allow my students to hear more stories being read aloud and model good, fluent reading for them. Most books on tape (CDs) use character voice and bring the books to life for young readers.
First grade is the year where most students learn to read, so a listening center would aid in their overall reading development.
Additionally, flexible seating is a great way for young learners to move around while they are learning. Bouncy ball chairs are perfect for flexible seating. We have one bouncy ball chair already and the students love to take turns sitting in it.
