I teach in a wonderful community, in a small school of about 700 students. The students who I teach have a variety of learning disabilities, many who struggle with reading comprehension, decoding, and even fluency at the high school level.
Reading is essential and the more we can get young adults to enjoy reading, the better off they will be.
Students need to be able to apply effective small group reading strategies to large group classroom settings. By teaching them these skills they develop confidence and can better analyze the grade level reading that is completed in core classes.
My Project
This material will allow for a more comfortable environment to read choice books. The rockers and stools will help provide movement for students while they engage in reading to help them stay focused. Students need to be comfortable as they begin to enjoy reading.
The picture books provide for a short simple lesson that the students can visually see and analyze what they think rather than reciting what they read.
The books are very important for teaching direct lessons and showing the students how to analyze why an author writes a certain way. This will help the students become more confident and transfer the reading strategies to their core academic classes.
