Flexible Seating Accommodations in the Primary Learning Lab
My students need flexible seating options, specifically wobble stools, in the Primary Learning Lab, in order to increase attentiveness and self-regulation while working on foundational academic and social skills.
The students that visit the Primary Learning Lab on a daily basis vary in grade level, from transitional kindergarten to first grade. A typical day for one of my students involves spending time between their general education classrooms, often with the support of an special education teacher or special education assistance, and in the Primary Learning Lab.
Regardless of grade level, every one of my students is excited about school and eager to learn, grow, and encourage one another.
In the Primary Learning Lab, we strive to create a classroom community where all students are valuable members. My students thrive with the high expectations and emphasis on a culture of kindness. Throughout this school year, I have been lucky enough to witness my students not only learning foundational academic skills, but also to gain empathy and a desire to embrace each other's differences. My students are hardworking, enthusiastic, and amazing.
My Project
The Primary Learning Lab is a room in our school where students are able to work on specific skills in an environment that truly takes students' needs into consideration. What used to be referred to as a "Resource Room" in many schools, the Primary Learning Lab is something different - a room where students are engaged, inspired, and challenged. Currently, my team is working on revolutionizing the seating options for students in the Primary Learning Lab. We want to provide a spectrum of seating options so that every student is able to find the "perfect fit." We are requesting donations in order to purchase flexible seating options for the Primary Learning Lab, specifically, Wobble Stools.
With flexible seating options available in the Primary Learning Lab, students will be able to worry less about wiggling, adjusting, and overstimulation, and focus more on making progress towards foundational academic and social skills.
Each one of the students that visits the Primary Learning Lab has made such amazing progress this school year, and I believe that we will be able to progress even further next year with flexible seating accommodations. Further, providing a range of options in the Primary Learning Lab will allow each student to become familiar with which options are most beneficial to his or her learning, and then they will be able to transfer this awareness and accomodation to the general education setting. Funding this project will contribute to students' academic growth, self-awareness, self-advocacy, and self-regulation.
