I teach in a self-contained special needs classroom. My class is made up of students grades 6, 7, and 8 with intellectual disabilities and Autism.
My students are unique, creative and have a love of learning.
My students love hands on activities and staying active. I want to provide my students with the best access to accommodations and a learning environment that helps them reach their full potential. I feel that a flexible seating environment will allow for my students to become their own and fully embrace education in a new way that better fits their needs.
My Project
Right now, my classroom consists of standard desks that are restrictive to the varied learning styles of my classroom. I have several students who focus better and are more engaged through movement. I have studied, researched and observed flexible seating and I believe that my students’ lives and educational needs would be greatly impacted in a positive way.
I have been able to purchase little things to begin to incorporate flexible seating into my classroom and the benefits have been truly amazing.
My students are staying on task, staying calm, feeling relaxed… If I could do a complete environment change, I feel this could truly change the lives of my students.
I hope to provide my students with desks that have swinging foot rests to allow them to move their feet and stay active during instruction without disrupting others, soft rocker chairs that support the sensory needs of my students, and balance balls to replace chairs to help my students focus better.
