I teach a remedial reading class to low-income, mostly minority students. I have middle school school students who are reading behind grade level and therefore are very reluctant readers. My middle school is 100% free lunch and over 90% minority.
Many of our scholars come from single family households, without the means to provide their students with the necessary school supplies for the year.
Many of our scholars have experienced indescribable hardships and come to school as a safe haven for their personal struggles. Often, some scholars have to walk through areas of violence to and from school.
Despite these hardships, we believe that our scholars deserve the best educational experience and that we need to work together with families, schools and the community, to provide our scholars with the skills necessary to have the most opportunities to thrive.
My Project
My scholars and I are seeking flexible seating to make reading and working in the classroom more comfortable and engaging. I have several students with different social and/or emotional needs and some with sensory concerns. Constantly sitting in a traditional, hard desk and chair can become uncomfortable and much less engaging to these scholars.
These materials will help my scholars experience an authentic reading space where they are sitting comfortably instead of always sitting in an upright position at a traditional desk with a chair.
They love to sit in different styles of seating and this couch/chair combo will provide a comfortable place for a scholars to get lost in a good book.
