My students need the additional wobble stools as they fight over them on a daily basis. The picnic loungers are also needed as we are no longer able to use pillows for head lice reasons.
Our school is located in a very low income neighborhood in our city. Many of the kids don't have a lot of background experiences because the money is not available for them to do things that kids from higher income neighborhoods come from. We have a high mobility rate and high ELL population.
Our students are great kids who deserve to have nice things at school because they may not get that at home, and we need to make school a great place to learn for them.
For some of these students, school is the one place that they feel safe and successful and where they have the support and attention that they need.
My Project
I started with DonorsChoose.org last year, and I will tell you it has made all the difference in the world for my students. We have increased productivity and more focus than ever. The students look forward to using our flexible seating and are disappointed if they lose the privilege. It keeps many of my tougher kiddos in my classroom because it meets their movement needs. I need to add more of the items that are my kids' favorites to fulfill their needs. The loungers, wobble stools, stability rockers, yoga balls, and lap desks are class favorites, and I don't have enough to go around. I also have to get rid of some of my floor pillows, so this will help me replace those items.
