My upcoming students are already excited about moving up to first grade. Many have had to adjust to new school requirements regarding COVID, while others stayed home and learned remotely. Some will have the challenge of adjusting to just being back in the classroom since they’ve been home since the pandemic began. With everything that they have faced at home and at school, I’m confident that these students will continue to do their best!
Small group instruction is necessary for all students. It allows teachers to focus precisely on what the students need to learn next to move forward. Due to the pandemic, having small group instruction was difficult depending on the size of the group. If the group had more than four students, they would have had to sit really close to one another. Instead of having them sit close, I had to create another group. Having too many groups means that all students can not be seen regularly. I would like to have a flexible seating solution for small group instruction, so that the amount of groups does not have to increase.
Since the pandemic is still a concern to us all, students will continue to need a decent amount of space between them during small group instruction, which can be provided with the right resources.
Portable lap desks will do a phenomenal job of providing the social distancing that is needed. The desks will be spread out on the rug, and they will also provide a great flat surface area for writing, reading, or using manipulatives. If needed these desks can be carried outside and allow students to continue working. The floor seat would be a great cushioned seat, with back support, for any adult that is working with the students on the rug as well.
