Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come excited to learn in two languages, as part of our Spanish Immersion Program that was adapted ten years ago to meet the need of our cultural and linguistic diversity in our district. Six years ago, parents got organized and successfully implemented uniforms at our school. This has helped our students to stay focused on learning and it has provided a positive learning environment for each student.
I am enriched and blessed by my students' diverse cultural, linguistic, and economic background.
More than 85% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.
All of my kindergarteners students get the amazing and unique opportunity to start learning in English and Spanish from K to 12. Close to 25% of my students' first language is English, and 50% of my students' first language is Spanish, and 25% speak another language. They share the journey to be able to graduate from high school bicultural, bilingual, and bi-literate; it all begins in my kindergarten classroom.
My Project
My students enter the classroom every morning ready to learn in two languages! Their long day in kindergarten stars 8:45 and ends by 3:15. Most of them manage to stay at their traditional chairs for about 10 minutes at the time specially at the beginning of the school year. They also get to sit at the carpet for 10 minutes at the time several times daily, but not all are able to stay focus on their learning for too that without the need to move around.
By having six portable desks, my students will have the option to move around the room and still stay focus on their learning for longer periods of time.
With the portable desks, they have the option to move their legs in different positions and still do their writing and reading done in small groups or privately. At age five is difficult to stay in one place for a long time without needing movement or space. My students will have the options to use them with regular chairs, on the floor or even outside! These desks offer more then a working space for them, but flexibility and portability.
