Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are adventurous fifth graders who are ambitious and fun loving. This group of students is extremely special to me as I have been their teacher for not only 5th grade, but also 4th grade. Through this experience, I have learned a great deal about how amazing each and every one of them are. Even while 72% of the students receive free and reduced lunch at our school, the student's optimism and passion for learning never falters.
These students are truly remarkable in every way and deserve the best learning environment possible.
The 26 students I've gotten to share the past two years with have grown so much as individuals and together. They are dreamers, thinkers, doers, and a very self-motivated bunch. Thus far, they do not even realize all that they are capable of.
My Project
Currently, our classroom features a few flexible seating options, such as yoga balls and bean bags. These opportunities have really enabled some of my students who may lose focus quickly to be more successful. By adding these items to our classroom inventory, I truly believe that each student will be able to have their own piece of flexible seating that is complimentary to them each and every day.
"It is really comfortable and gets me more excited and comfortable while working," stated one student.
Flexible seating allows for the whole child's needs to be met more readily and accessibly. With limited gym time and recess being indoors often due to the weather, flexible seating provides students with movement and a level of comfort. One student said, "Flexible seating helps me learn because instead of sitting in my seat, I can be comfy when I do my work."
As I think about my students, I truly want the best for them. This expands to their learning environment. While some have been affected by elements outside of their control at home, I want school to always be a safe, comfortable environment for them to return to day in and day out.
