I have been blessed with a wonderful group of first grade students. Throughout our year together my students grow so much and in so many different ways. Although we have support from our parents and the community, there are still some resources that are not readily available to the teachers or our students.
Our school is a Title I School in a small, rural community with a student population of approximately 600 students.
My students come from various economic backgrounds, and there are many instances where families simply aren't able to provide a wide variety of materials for the most efficient student learning. The students simply use what is available to them. I would love to provide them with more hands-on opportunities to learn. There are also resources I would like to provide my students with to keep them excited and engaged in their learning.
My Project
My first graders are so excited about school and learning and I want them to learn as much as possible. As a teacher, I know my students need to be constantly engaged in what they are learning. I can't expect them to sit in their desk and work with paper and pencils all day long. They need to get up and move around the room working with various resources.
This project will allow my students some flexible seating while at the small group table and allow them to work around the room using dry erase markers with boards or pockets to show their work.
My students are currently sitting in chairs while at their desk, the computers, and the small group table. These stools would provide students a chance to have some flexible seating at the small group table giving them a break from their regular chairs. Students always love the opportunity to use dry erase markers, but are limited at this time to only using them on their desktops. This in turn is keeping my students in the regular chairs and desks for longer periods of time. With the help of dry erase boards and pockets my students would be able to work around the room and could write and erase their work without using the traditional paper and pencils all day long.
