I teach 26 1st graders in New York. We are a classroom full of different personalities, background experiences and environmental diversities. My students love computer games and building projects with STEAM.
Not many of my students know, or have learned to, sit for long periods of time- that is why movement is key to grabbing their attention.
We have a classroom full of clunky old desks and old metal chairs. They are uncomfortable-even for me!
My students thrive and focus when we move around and get our creative juices flowing.
My Project
Let's break the stigma of boring, old, clunky classrooms. Flexible seating will allow my students to take charge of their learning by being able to choose where they sit to learn and work.
If Starbucks and big box companies like Google can offer flexible seating, why are we expecting our students to sit in rows of desks and heavy metal chairs for hours?
I want to focus on being mindful- On giving my students the best opportunities to learn in a comfortable, stress-free environment.
Flexible seating will do just this and let them rise to be the best versions of themselves.
