My students are very important people who have faced varying levels of trauma by the time they are suppose to be ready to attend school. Their age might say they are ready for school but their little lives have experienced traumatic events or situations no adult could ever imagine; now try to learn. Although my students want to learn and want to be at school, their little minds are constantly racing and in flight or fight mode. Because of their energy level and need for movement, we are continuing to build on a flexible seating classroom.
We want to provide whatever tools our little guys need to be successful in an otherwise foreign space for them.
The more comfortable we can help them become, the better they will learn!
My Project
As many of my students come in with various needs, each of their needs are different from each other and most change daily. With that comes the need to have options for seating in order to meet them where they're at each day. Some days, it is nice to work on the floor, work in a comfy chair, engage in learning on a stability ball, or have a different work space.
Like adults, our kids need options too.
We like to move throughout the day while we work, we change where we sit, and we make adjustments based on our needs at that moment. Our kids need to have options too... especially our students that have traumatic experiences interfering with their ability to learn in a traditional setting and classroom. If a comfy chair with a lap desk is what will get a fragile student to complete their reading for the day then consider it a WIN!
