My students need flexible learning supports such as seating options, pencil grips, write and wipe pockets, storage boxes, tote bags, earmuffs, clipboards, and privacy partitions.
I teach at an innovative arts-integrated public school where students are encouraged to inquire about the world around them. My school offers a looping program where students stay with the same teacher for two years. My current group is moving with me from Kindergarten to 1st grade. This will mean some incredible developmental leaps in reading, writing, and critical thinking. My students are an inspiring group of problem-solvers who have a wide range of academic and social needs. They have worked incredibly hard to become strong learners who support each other in a variety of ways.
In our classroom we have a big focus on building community through social-emotional tools, play, and of course with art!
In Kindergarten, we had a challenging, but rewarding year of creating a strong classroom family. I look forward to building on that this year: strengthening connections, exploring new things, and filling our room with love and joy for learning. My classroom is not afraid to make mistakes and explore their full range of creativity.
My Project
I have an incredibly diverse group of learning modalities in my classroom and they are in need of more materials that better suit their specific needs. My students know that everyone learns differently and that we work together to better understand our own needs and also support each other. As I better understand what my students need in order to focus on our learning and be successful, I am finding a need for more differentiated materials to meet these needs.
Every student deserves the opportunity to learn in ways that promote self-confidence and grow their strengths.
By adding more flexible materials to our classroom, I hope to support students through their struggles and successes. I have a number of students with noise-sensitivity, sensory needs, and fine-motor needs. We are in need of more flexible seating for the rug, noise-cancelling headphones, privacy boards, and pencil grips to help with our sensory needs. Many of my students also benefit from working at the carpet when needed so we are looking to have clipboards and dry-erase sleeves. We are also starting to get more organized in 1st grade, so my students need canvas bags to store all their materials for targeted reading instruction.
I know that all of my students can be successful and I can't wait to better support their varied learning needs!
