Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are fun and friendly children who are eager to learn! I am a special education teacher in Queens, NY. Although my students struggle academically or emotionally, they are motivated to learn. I teach kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade all in one classroom. When I first learned that I would be teaching 3 grades, I thought about the classroom environment.
I was hoping to create a safe learning environment where my students could choose the best tools for their age or needs.
So, last year I purchased 2 wobble stools and 2 ball chairs. I was filled with joy when I heard students say, “The ball chair helps me focus.” or “I can get my wiggles out now!” I noticed an immediate change in my students. They were engaged during lessons and independent learning time.
We opened up our classroom to other students in our school. Whether a student was having a bad day, or just needed a break, we welcomed them into our classroom. While my students were always open and eager to share, we had limited seating. The only challenge was not having enough for all. That is where my project comes in!
My Project
In order to support the different needs of all my students, I would like to create an environment that provides flexible seating for all students. This year I will have the same students as last year. We will continue to use our current seating but would like to add other options. We would like to have a flex-space couch, flex-space floor seats, flex-space seat and a wobble cushion.
This will give students the opportunity to be and feel comfortable so that they can focus on their learning.
