My students need to move their bodies, to learn in a way that allows them comfortability, a choice in working and learning while moving. The items I am requesting also work on core strength and flexibility!
I teach 1st grade and each year I am surprised by how sweet, eager, and ready these students are for learning. In our Title 1 school we have 86% free and reduced lunch. The students that walk in our doors come from many diverse backgrounds and many needs such as academic, social, emotional, and coping skills.
Each student I am blessed to teach comes to school with many different learning styles, a desire to learn, and a need for a positive school atmosphere.
Students in first grade are learning so many fun and new skills that will enhance the rest of their academic career.
My Project
Last year I incorporated basic flexible seating within my classroom. Students were given seating options such as sitting on knees, clipboards, lap desks, stools, crates, and standing options. My students were able to choose a seating option that fit a learning style they desired. I gave each student opportunities to move throughout the day while still being productive with work. Engagement and on-task behaviors increased!
Flexible seating engaged my students in group projects, independent tasks, and thinking time to provide a better learning environment for all!
Students were able to have a voice in their education and I saw so much success and growth in this flexible classroom. Students learn differently and flexible seating options allows each student to figure out how they work best.
I loved seeing students change seating choices throughout the day depending upon the task we were up against. These new options will give students more choices and more success with all subject work!
Not only do my students come with diverse backgrounds, they also come with diverse needs. Wobble chairs, wobble cushions, and balance balls enhance core work as well!
