Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am honored to work with great and energetic kindergarten students on the Southwest side of Chicago. Our classroom is composed of 35+ bilingual Spanish students. We are located in a low-income neighborhood where many of our students qualify for free lunch.
My students are full of energy and many of them are being exposed to a classroom environment and a day full of academic learning for the very first time.
They are all eager to learn and take pride in their work daily.
My Project
All students need a flexible learning environment where they have access to different ways in which they learn best. Many classrooms stick to the basic normal table and chair format expecting all students to sit quietly and learn.
Studies have shown that students, just as us adults, learn best when we are given the choice of where our learning can take place.
Many of my students have never been in a classroom let alone be expected to sit on a chair for eight hours of their day and learn. With this project, I hope to provide my students with a learning environment in which they are given options to choose where they feel they can learn best. Students can choose to sit on the mini sofas, on wobble stools, standing up, or simply on the floor with clipboards.
Not all students are the same and not all students learn the same. With this project, I hope to be able to address all of my students learning styles.
