Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My class has 6 awesome students with special needs. Their needs include having Down Syndrome, Intellectual Disabilities, Dyslexia, Orthopedic Impairments and some are non-verbal. ALL are so special to me and have the ability to learn in their own way.

They may have different abilities but they learn and work hard just like the students without labels.

Their labels do not define them. "See the able, not the label." In my classroom, I believe in developing the needs of the WHOLE child.

My Project

My classroom has flexible seating, but a couple of my students need more sturdy options that an ottoman could provide. Having ottomans would allow these students to have seat options as well. We are an inclusive classroom and do not want anyone to feel left out.

In the special needs classroom, visuals and timers are essential!

We use timers for almost everything, especially our transitions. Having a visual timer that gives a warning, would help my students gain more independence and lessen anxiety as they prepare to transition to the next activity. The visuals will also help my student with a hearing impairment.
