My Students
I am the general education teacher of an inclusion classroom with twenty-two 3rd grade students who live in a rural, economically depressed area with 58% of the students receiving free or reduced-price lunch. I have 11 academically challenged students who are two or more levels below grade level. In addition, I have a group of students with social and emotional concerns. Having this alternative seating will help reduce the number of behavioral concerns so they can focus more on learning.
My Project
Research proves that all students learn differently, and some learning styles change based on subject/content areas. Recently, I converted my classroom into one of flexibility; Stand, sit on the floor, lay on the floor so long as focused learning is taking place. This transformation has been life changing. So, I decided I wanted more items to allow for student flexibility. Using different options for seating such as stability balls, cushions, tables, traditional and desks with disc seats allow students to get their blood flowing while still working. I can't believe the positive changes that I have seen in my students work ethics, grades and attention span!
