Help me give my students yoga mats, cushions, and colorful stools so they can have the opportunity to work in a way that is most comfortable and best suited to their individual learning styles.
My school is tucked away within the center of a small, neighborhood community. Although there is a close "family feel" and many others who are eager to help as needed, purchasing 21st century teaching materials can add up in cost.
It is my philosophy to view each student as a child first while gaining mutual respect, understanding, and trust towards one another.
It is only once those core values are developed that true teaching can take place. With access to proper materials and resources, my students will go the distance to achieve their full potential.
My home-base classroom is comprised of 20 students who are eager to learn, grow, and explore. I work with these students to build upon their own personal development while providing content area instruction in reading, writing, science, and social studies.
My Project
If there is one big thing I have taken away from my last 5 years of teaching, it is that students appreciate choice and flexibility! Aside from the diverse cultural backgrounds that enter my classroom, there are also diverse learning styles just waiting to be met.
Sitting at a desk for approximately 8 hours a day can be a challenge for many; this is why it is so important to offer my students the opportunity to stretch and move around while they work!
I have seen students complete their work stretched across their stomachs, lying on their backs, standing at their desks, and even curled up ender a table. Flexible seating helps stimulate the mind, often times allowing students to produce better work. Additionally, my students have learned about the importance of choosing wisely, and respecting public property.
Fortunately, and unfortunately, my flexible seating options have been well-loved by many students over the past 5 years. My carpet squares are fraying, dirty, and dusty; the bean bag chairs are stained and held together with duct tape. It's time for "out with the old and in with the new"! These new yoga mats and cushions can be easily wiped down after each use and won't have loose threads that students can pull. I have ordered enough so that each student will be able to alternate with a buddy throughout the week. Both of these seating options can also be utilized during quick brain breaks and mindfulness activities. The bright stools will serve as an enticing seating option for small group instruction around my table.
