The students in our inclusion classroom come to school each day with great enthusiasm. They are excited to find ways to help others even though many are struggling themselves.
My school services families from countries including Somalia, Nepal, Burma, Vietnam, and India.
69% of our students qualify for free lunch, and 25% of the students are English Language Learners. Many of our English Language Learners are refugees from countries where they endured horrible ordeals. These children need to be able to enter a classroom environment that allows them to be in control of their own learning.
My Project
I began the school year by asking my students how they learn best. Three quarters of my class told me that they learned best in a comfortable environment. Right now, the classroom is the opposite of comfortable. The desks are all different heights, and frequently come apart. We do not have enough chairs in the classroom, and students constantly have to move them to different areas.
My students need the ability to move during lessons in order to focus and be engaged learners.
The wobble stools and cushions will help the students who need movement in order to learn. This would also be a calming action for several students.
We have a small classroom that needs to accommodate 27 students and two teachers. The stack-able stools will save space, and will also fit under the kidney tables during small group work. The students won't use valuable class time trying to move chairs from their desks to squeeze in around the tables.
