Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class is full of 28 amazing first graders. They love working and playing together every day. Approximately 88% of our students receive free or reduced lunch, and over 80% of our school population is second language learners. Our students come from diverse backgrounds, but one thing they all have in common is a love for learning new things and trying their best!
My first-grade students arrive with a variety of strengths, needs, and interests.
We work really hard to create a classroom community that includes and supports everyone. I strive to create a classroom that is safe, comfortable, organized and visually appealing. My students take a lot of pride in their classroom, and they also work hard to maintain a peaceful learning environment.
My Project
Over the last few years, I have begun moving away from a traditional classroom with desks and chairs, and instead begun providing a variety of flexible work spaces. In my classroom you will find high and low tables, wobble stools, lap desks, yoga balls and bean bags. Students are given the opportunity to try out the different work areas and decide what works best for them. Students can also choose whether to work with a partner, in a group, or alone. When students make choices, they take more ownership of their learning. When students are comfortable, they are more focused on their work.
Due to an increase in class size this year, I am requesting additional flexible seating so that all students can enjoy the benefit of choosing their seat.
The comfy floor seats will work perfectly with our low table. They are also great for students who want to curl up with a book on the carpet. The adjustable stools will be a great accompaniment to our high table. Students of different sizes will be able to adjust the stool so that it is the right height for them. These seats make it easy for students to move around the room in order to work and collaborate with other students.
I have seen the benefits first hand of integrating flexible seating into a classroom. I am looking forward to providing more choices for my students and continuing to create a unique and fun learning environment!
