I teach 6th grade Math and Science in an urban middle school located in Madison, Wisconsin. The group of 11 and 12 year old scholars that enter my room each day are a diverse group of kids but have one goal in common: to be the best that they can be.
Staff and students work to understand and disrupt predictable patterns and beliefs with regard to race and equity in order to change practices to ensure all students are valued and challenged at high levels.
In striving to meet our school's equity vision, my 6th graders and I work hard each day to create a learning enviornment that feels like home, with classmates that feel like family.
Flexible seating allows students to have options in where they work. Students who have trouble sitting at the desks provided by the school have choices to stand up and work or choose a seat that will allow them to move and work. I have selected a standing desk with a kick bar where more than one student can stand and work. I have also requested a ball chair that will allow students to wiggle around while still working with their peers at tables. With more flexible seating options in our classroom, students will be able to be the best math and science students they can be!
