Our school has 800 students who live in a low to middle class area. The parents work hard to make ends meet and provide their families with the basics. I teach second grade and I am always eager to create a fun and engaging learning environment for them. They often complain of having to sit at desks for extended periods of time. They thrive when they have movement or can sit where they like in the classroom.
I love their energy and how inquisitive they are, even when their exposure to certain topics is so limited.
My Project
My students are full of life and movement. I am a hands on teacher who believes in engaging the full student, mind and body. My second graders have learned the procedures to move around the room and even sit or stand while they learn.
I have noticed that many of them often just want to stretch out on the floor or stand and bend over their desks while they work.
Unfortunately, the current furniture in my classroom, does not always make for the full flexibility and accessibility of space as I envision for my students.
I want to complete a classroom transformation to incorporate full flexible seating and create an environment where the students truly feel at home each day they walk in, and where they are ready to learn.
The exercise balls, bean bags and floor cushions will allow them to pick a seating arrangement to their liking.
The risers will elevate some current desks for standing for the students who like to lean.
The end tables and rectangle tables will allow for kneeling and great areas for group work.
