I teach in the lowest-income/highest poverty elementary school in my district. My students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite this, they are eager to learn!
My students deserve to learn based on what is best for them!
Many of my students are being raised in single parent households and receive a free lunch based upon their family need. Some of my students may struggle, due to lack of parental involvement and limited access to materials, but it does not get in their way of learning.
As educators learn more and more about the development of the brain each day, my students are eager to learn with me about how their brains grow, learn, and react. We use our knowledge of the brain to create a community in which students are able to make choices for their best learning as well as self regulate their emotions problem solve student to student.
Each day with my students brings something new and I couldn't be more grateful to a part of their world!
My Project
There is no doubt in this changing world, the way students learn and develop is also changing. The seating options in my current classroom however, are much the same as they were when I myself was a student. My students cannot sit at a table in a uniformly sized chair or on the carpet and effectively learn.
Research has shown students who are given the opportunity to choose from a variety of seating options are more engaged in the learning, feel a sense of empowerment, exhibit increased scores on state assessments, and are generally healthier - both physically and emotionally.
My students will learn to make choices based on how they learn best, while at the same time developing social skills such as cooperation and personal responsibility when they work in groups. Seating options such as wobble stools will promote better blood flow, core strength, and increased metabolism. The more students are able to move, the more alert and focused they will be.
I have sat in the same seats as my students and found them to be terribly uncomfortable. If I wouldn't choose to sit in them, how can I ask my students to do so?
