Help me give my students the chance to move around their classroom while finding a comfortable spot to learn best, whether it be on a wobble stool, at a dry erase table or using a wobble cushion!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach two engaging groups of 4th-grade students in Queens, NY. My students come from all over the world but mostly Mexico, Central America, Puerto Rico, South East Asia and Poland. 84% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch.
I teach math and science to two 4th-grade classes and am consistently impressed with their level of knowledge, curiosity and never-ending perseverance.
My students are motivated and ready to learn. They push themselves to break down challenging questions and think about various strategies to solve. They collaborate and are always ready to help one another.
My Project
Flexible seating will guide my students to take control over both their learning space and their learning preference. We all learn differently and need different scaffolds to support us. Some need the traditional desk to be organized and clear minded, others need a clipboard on the floor, and still others need a wobble stool or a fidget band to get the "wiggles" out!
This project is an effort to empower my students to find both their best learning space and their style in the classroom.
Presently, they move around my room and find nooks and spaces to work in, but with no supports. Being able to move their bodies on a wobble stool or find a comfortable learning spot on a wobble cushion or stool gives them the freedom to focus. We spend extended periods of time working on very complicated math concepts and sometimes forget that these students are only 9 and 10 years old and need outlets to release energy. I'm hoping that this project and new classroom format will give them an outlet for extra energy and the ability to work in their best environment.
