My students need an array of seating to be successful in the classroom. We keep things invigorating and bright to stay motivated all day by integrating flexible seating and choices to stay independent.
My students are a rambunctious and curious group of 2nd graders who thrive in order and routine. They are active and hardworking, and creating a space that is welcoming and full of choice will not only help them academically, but also grow in respect for materials and responsibility for their learning.
It is so much fun to see them sprout into these young learners.
We have adopted many new curricula that promote independent work time, and lots of it! I hope these classroom materials will help create a safe space for children to be brave, kind, and endure the positive struggle of learning.
My Project
I have found over the past 5 years that choice and color make a huge difference in my students. If they 'earn' the opportunity to choose where to work, how to work, and what to work with, the intrinsic motivation skyrockets. Something about the movement and bright colors keeps them going.
The new flexible seating options will allow me to use my current tables in new ways and in different arrangements, while adding pizazz to the classroom environment.
With this project, my students will be able to choose from stools that roll, seats that bounce, ones that are low to the ground and ones that boost them up. Each child will be permitted to choose a seat that enhances their learning and ability to stay focused and engaged.
For this project, I will be asking for two new types of seating. One option will be a rolling tractor seat. This option is backless and moves easily, but is low to the ground and more rigid. My other seating type will be large inflatable donut balls The balls are flat on the top and bottom so that they do not roll say. They allow for a slight bounce, but are low to the ground and will be perfect for the kiddo who needs some mindless, safe movement.
