This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
These group of kids makes a teacher like me look forward to coming into work every single day. They are always excited to learn; eager to make good choices throughout the day, and have a passion for learning. Our school is incredibly diverse and prides itself on building a strong community not only among staff and students but families and partners in the neighborhood. Our school has a variety of students with different economic backgrounds, ethnicities, family compositions, and they embody the traits we want to instill in our future graduates; cooperative, assertive, responsible, empathetic and has self-control.
My Project
Abraham Maslow, an American psychologist, came up with a theory that if a student's basic needs are met they are able to focus better in the classroom. One of those needs is physiological. Feeling comfortable in your space makes a big difference.
My students learn best when they can choose where they work in their classroom.
Whether they decide to sit in a chair, sit on the floor, stand up, lie on the floor or sit on a special chair that wobbles or rocks, it allows them to find a space where they can concentrate on being scholars. Using a wobble chair students do not have to sit still! They have the ability to move 360 degrees sitting while staying in place. The bouncy bands are a great resting spot for their feet when sitting in any chair and they can bounce their legs if they need to fidget. The carpet is another place they can use other flexible seats like wobble disks and comfy chairs to read.
