This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are you typical ten year olds; they like to have fun, make jokes, sing and dance to the songs of the day, and hang out with their friends. That being said, I'm always amazed by how thoughtful they are and how hard they work to meet the expectations of their family, and their teachers. Furthermore, we make it a point to talk about our goals and how we can make a life doing the things that we enjoy - I have no doubt that these kids will have a positive impact on this world.
My Project
Seating autonomy promotes independence, helps with behavior management when students feel in control, and is fun!
As a teacher, I often try and give my students as much choice as possible within the classroom.
I believe that having choice promotes independence and students learn valuable skills around deciding how, and where they work best? Is it comfortable in a bean bag chair? At their desk with a wobbly chair? Or sitting on the floor with a lab desk? This type of decision making promotes the type of independence that I want to cultivate in my students.
Specifically, wobbly chairs are wonderful for the classroom because the movement of the chairs helps students who are fidgety. Also, they're so easy to move around the classroom and are perfect for getting students to meet quickly in small groups. To top it off, they are fun! Students really enjoy having these types of chairs as an option. I've seen how beneficial they are and I think a set for my classroom would be awesome!
