My Students

Our school is a Title I school located in a lower-socioeconomic (high poverty) area in Salem, OR. Many of our students come from bilingual households where their first language is Spanish, Russian or another language represented at our school. As a school, our goal is to focus on college and career readiness both academically and behaviorally. Our school provides a rigorous curriculum, wonderful, supportive teachers, and a safe learning environment for all kids.

School is a place where our students practice being citizens by adhering to our school values: being safe, respectful, responsible, and kind.

Despite the challenges students face at home and at school, we are always trying to create meaningful academic and social-emotional experiences that pique their interests. All students want to do well; we continue to need tools and supports to help every child build skills to achieve their potential.

Our students have experienced trauma, abuse, neglect, and far more adverse childhood experiences than any person should. However, they come to school with a desire to learn, grow, and overcome challenges. Many think school is a place to learn reading, writing, and math. Our students must also learn they are valued and resilient people.

My Project

Sitting in rows of desks with chairs, listening to a teacher's well prepared lesson, is no longer how our students learn. Spending the bulk of the school seated at a desk does not work for all students.

Many teachers are now offering nontraditional seating options for their students to be able to move so they stay engaged and focused.

Children need to move. Flexible seating allows them to wobble, rock, bounce, lean or stand, which increases oxygen flow to the brain, blood flow and core strength. This helps keep young minds more alert and focused. Many of our students have been diagnosed with ADHD, ASD, Anxiety, and sensory processing disorders. Flexible seating can provide students’ additional sensory input and help children focus and process information.

We are hoping to acquire a variety of items to share with students who have diverse sensory and behavioral needs: yoga balls, wiggle seats, bouncy bands, wobble stools, and a balance board. We want to empower our students to understand their unique bodies and minds. We all have our individual styles to how we learn information, therefore we want to empower students to find materials, supports, and devices that help them focus.
