I teach 3rd grade in an urban school with a diverse student population. The students in my classroom are active, hands-on eager learners who thrive when given a chance to work using flexible seating. Due to their high level of activity, they also require lots of structure in order to succeed.
Students are more focused and more learning occurs when working in a way they feel comfortable.
I currently have some flexible seating options available, but not enough to meet the needs of all my learners. I want all of my students to feel at home in my classroom.
My Project
The rug will be a perfect addition to my already colorful classroom. It will allow my students to have a designated spot on the floor when participating in my mini lessons. My reading and math lessons always start on the carpet. I have tried marking spots with tape, but the tape gets pulled up or students pick at it. I have also tried choice spots, it didn't go well.
My students need this rug to help them focus.
They will have a designated spot that can't be pulled up or they are not sitting with a distracting friend.
They lap desks will add 6 more flexible seating options for my students to use. The hard surface is perfect for completing work on paper or the computer.
