Active, engaged, and endlessly curious . . .are three characteristics anyone would notice about the students in my class. Each day they arrive at school ready and enthusiastic to learn! We have a wonderful multilingual and multicultural classroom where kids are eager to help and learn one another.
I am constantly amazed at the challenges my students overcome and want to provide them with the best possible learning environment!
Whether it be a personal goal or a difficulty outside of the classroom we work hard to solve our problems together and support one another.
Every day my second graders are eager to learn, but let's face it, who wants to sit on a hard chair for hours at end? Not many second graders! Although some children enjoy sitting at a traditional desk, most have a difficult time doing this and end up wiggling or engaging in distracting behaviors. This doesn't help them or anyone else learn.
By providing my students with additional, comfortable options for seating, they will be better able to focus on their learning.
Items such as floor cushions at lowered tables or with clipboards and stretchy bands for wiggling feet will allow each child to develop the metacognitive skills to understand where and how they work best. Flexibility and choice will allow for more focused work, less distraction for others, and higher independent skills.
