This year, I have accepted a new position as a 6th-grade social studies teacher, leaving my previous position in 7th-grade Special Ed. My incoming students are about to discover and explore ancient history, developing a deeper understanding of the prehistoric world that has led them to this very moment in time. It is with great pleasure that I will be learning alongside these students, as I tackle a new position and begin my second year as an educator.
The student make up of my school is widely diverse and consists of a high percentage of African American, Hmong, and Latino students.
The vast majority of my incoming students will be coming from economically challenged households, many whom will qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. This year, I will be responsible for a total of 200 6th-grade students during the school year. Among this group, one out of five students will be labeled as special education students.
Ensuring that my students feel comfortable, safe, and supported in the space I am responsible for is of utmost importance to me. Learning is immensely challenging without resources and a supportive/welcoming environment, and I am extremely dedicated to ensuring both for my incoming students.
My Project
In order to enhance the social, emotional, and mental wellness of my classroom, my students need materials that meet their need for movement. With these ball chairs, I will be able to implement flexible seating into my classroom, allowing my students to increase their physical activity, which has proven to enhance academic success and student focus. Next year, my students will have to endure a 75-minute social studies period.
Thus, if I can create a space where my students feel comfortable and less limited for the duration of my class, I want to be able to do that.
These ball chairs will nonetheless help increase focus, productivity, and academic success.
