My students need a variety of seating options including 2 beanbag seats, 1 portable writing station and dry erase contact paper to be placed on the classroom tables.
As a special education teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, I have students who are faced with several challenges due to their disabilities both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences. Many of them are being raised in single parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical". From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives; however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic excellence.
I have prepared a warm, welcoming, and comfortable classroom.
My Project
My classroom is a student-led style where students take the lead in their education.
Flexible seating will offer my students options in choosing their preferred spot to read and work in the classroom.
Our beanbag chairs will be a central spot in the classroom and will offer a comfy spot to dive into a good book. Comfortable students are more calm, focused, and productive. Research has proven that flexible seating and a warm environment produce higher rates in student's academic performance. It also encourages children to share space and supplies. The contact paper will be used on classroom furniture for students to work on math problems literally anywhere around the room! The portable lap desk will be used for students to freely choose a space in the classroom where they can work best!
