My students need Wobble chairs, foam cushions, and floor desks in order to allow them to focus on the work they are doing and not on feeling uncomfortable while they are learning.
Each child in my classroom loves to learn, although the method and environment in which each student needs to learn best vary greatly. We incorporate a variety of learning strategies, group work, and alternative seating and learning options to ensure that each student's needs are met, right where they are.
Each year I am gifted with truly an incredible group, and I am so lucky and thankful to have a new group of learners that are excited and ready to learn each year!
My Project
I want to create a more inviting, collaborative, and engaging classroom environment that is student-based and inspires active learning. Each year I work with more and more students who are diagnosed with ADHD. Flexible seating with a focus on furniture that allows body movement will help these students, and all students, in my opinion, learn at their personal best.
Flexible classrooms give students a choice in what kind of learning space works best for them, and it helps them to work collaboratively, communicate with other students, and engage in critical thinking.
Brain research also confirms that physical activity – moving, stretching, and walking – can actually enhance the learning process. Eric Jensen (2000), in his article Moving with the Brain in Mind, protests against the sedentary classroom style and suggests a better way to spend the long days in our classrooms, not only for students but for teachers. Teachers need to engage students in a greater variety of postures, including walking, lying down, moving, leaning against a wall or desk, perching, or even squatting. The brain learns best and retains most when the organism is actively involved in physical activity.
By offering more comfortable "flexible" seating options, this will allow for children to learn in the spot that works best for them. This enables them to take charge of their own learning. It also allows students to move their bodies while they are working.
The seating choices I would like to incorporate include Wobble Stools for using at tables or desks, square cushions for the floor with clipboards OR they can be used as seating at low tables. Floor desks allow choice around the room and encourage collaboration.
