My students need seating options, rocker chairs and beanbag chairs, to allow choice in their learning environment, which will ultimately increase engagement in the classroom.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come to school every day ready to learn. They get excited about everything that is put in front of them and they will work way beyond what I expect of them. I push them every day because I want them to know that they are more than capable of achieving any dream that they have.
I teach at a Title I school in California where 100 percent of our students qualify for free breakfast and lunch.
We are a small school of only 120 students, K-8, with the best students!!
These kids are incredible and deserve to have every opportunity to learn. My goal is to not only prepare my students for 5th grade, but to prepare them for life outside of the classroom. I want them to know that if they can think it or dream it then they can do it. They are the future and I want to give them every opportunity to be successful!
My Project
Over the last couple of years I have noticed that many of my students feel restricted by having to sit at a desk all day. I have implemented flexible seating into my classroom with what I could, but have noticed that even without an alternative option students would prefer to sit on the floor than at their desks. I want to be able to provide them with alternative options.
Giving students choice creates learners who enjoy learning and who are more engaged!
The rocker chairs and beanbag chairs that I am requesting will give them the option of choosing which learning environment is best for them.
The rocker chairs and beanbag chairs will be used the most during independent and collaborative working times throughout the day. This is where students will convene for literature circles, independent vocabulary/spelling practice, and independent reading time. Students will use the rockers and bean bags to create their own little testing bubbles, where they can concentrate without being distracted by classmates.
I have seen an increase in student engagement this year with the option of moving around the classroom. Because of the increase in student engagement, I have seen an increase in student output. Students are interacting more, they are talking more, and all of this has increased their levels of understanding. Benchmark scores from the beginning of the year until now have increased and all of my students have jumped reading levels.
My students and I look forward to putting this project to use quickly in our classroom. We thank you for taking the time to read about our project and how it will enhance the learning experiences happening here at B.E.
