My students need different flexible seating options to help create an environment that allows students to build choice making skills, foster creativity, and take control of their own learning.
I teach Pre-K in a public, inner city school. My students are enthusiastic, creative, love to explore, and love any and all hands on activities. They love to take ownership of their learning and take chances both academically and socially. For most of them, our classroom is the first experience they have in school; it’s the foundation on which their life as life long learners begin. As students come into the classroom, we want to foster the excitement they have in learning and give each of them the tools and resources to be successful. My goal is to provide a class environment that is engaging and promotes exploration, decision making skills, and movement that is conducive to their learning!
My Project
Research has proven that students who are able to engage their bodies during learning have better retention and focusing skills. Movement also helps reduce stress and anxiety in students. The items listed will allow students to move while learning, while simultaneously foster their decision making skills. Students have the ability to choose seating that best fits their needs at that moment, while also building an understanding of their own thinking and decision making skills. Balance balls and wobble chairs will be used for students to help build their core strength, which will help when students begin writing. Cushions and floor chairs will allow students to chose an area of the room to work and be independent. Foam kneeling pads will be used for student to sit at a lowered desk to do their work. The mats will allow student students to have an understanding of their own personal work space! With a variety of flexible seating, students will be able to better understand their own working needs and feel successful in their day! What works for one doesn’t run for all, and the goal is to allow everyone to be successful!
