My students need areas in the classroom to move about and show their learning. Flexible seating spots will allow them to focus in on tasks and enjoy learning along the way.
I teach a wonderful group of 8-9 year olds. In my 9th year of teaching, I see the need for students to be able to move around and have some flexibility while doing assignments and tasks. It is important that they listen to instruction, but there is a growing need for students to get the chance to either let out some energy in the classroom without disruptions or move to a new location to improve their focus.
I have multiple students who are ADD or ADHD and sitting for long periods of time is very hard for them.
I have others with reading disabilities and many who come from a low socio-economic homes. We are a Title 1 school and are trying our best to meet their basic needs, all while trying to teach them material to be successful in life.
My Project
Last summer, I decided to give flexible seating a try. With my own money, I purchased budget friendly items like yoga mats, pillows, beach chairs, and stools. They have been a HUGE success! This has inspired me add to the small collection.
Since much of my class have ADD and ADHD issues, I know continuing and improving my flexible seating will increase student growth.
Kids these days need a chance to move around and still be able to show growth. The bean bag chairs, soft seats, and floor seats would be perfect additions to my classroom. Flexible seating has already been helpful, and I hope this project will ensure successful years to come.
