My students need light filters, Regency wobble stools, and fidget bands to allow their active little bodies to "wobble" while they are in guided reading groups.
Our school is a Title l School with over half of our students coming from low-income households. Most of my students come to school seeking not only an education but for their physical and emotional needs to be met. My 4th grade students are amazing! Many of them are responsible for getting themselves (and their siblings) ready each day, preparing meals, and completing their homework all while their parents are working multiple jobs to try and make ends meet. They are some of the bravest and sweetest kids I know.
I want to provide not only a safe, loving environment for my students but a place where they thrive academically.
At our school, we work to make sure all students are on the path to being college/career ready. I encourage my students to make certain choices about their education. I strive to have them take ownership in their learning. I am beyond blessed to work with such a great group of students!
My Project
These materials will take my students to a higher level of performance. By funding this project, you will be able to help these students close the achievement gap. My students will be less stressed during classroom instruction and able to focus more on their learning targets. When my students enter the room each day they won’t be anxious or distracted but rather engaged and excited.
Flexible seating allows students to take ownership in their learning.
Each day they are given the opportunity to choose the seat that helps them learn best. This shifts the classroom from a sense of "mine" to "ours" and creates a communal environment.
Research shows that flexible seating is a way to improve student engagement, increase participation, and motivate students. Flexible seating allows students with ADD/ADHD, SPD, OCD, and more disabilities to move freely while focusing on coursework. Chair bands, wobble stools, and fidget toys allow the learner to move without disrupting instruction for others. Fluorescent lights can be over-stimulating and distracting. Tranquil blue light covers will reduce glare and eye strain as well as provide a calm learning environment. Calmer learning environments lead to higher achievement among learners. These items will greatly benefit my students; I am relying on your help to make this dream a reality in our room.
