My students need stationary and "wobbly" stools and bean bag chairs so that they have the freedom to choose the seat that is most conducive for learning based on each child's needs.
Our rural school hosts about 500 students in grades PK-4 and the majority are bused in from the three nearest towns. Students come from a variety of economic situations, and many are from single parent homes. We are considered a Title 1 (low income) district. Our location also brings in many Spanish speaking migrant students and families, along with their unique needs.
Third grade is an incredibly important year as we work to build independence and stamina.
Staying focused and working cooperatively can be challenging for a seven or eight year old. We are working on reading to learn, instead of learning to read, and need to be able to stay on task to do so. We are also working hard to become independent thinkers and problem solvers. Hands on, interactive activities are a must to prepare us for the real world!
My Project
Students crave movement... ALL day long! They are constantly tapping their pencils, feet, wiggling in their seats or getting up out of their seats for any number of reasons. Movement is great and necessary for learning, until it causes a distraction to other students.
Stools, wobble seats and bean bag chairs would give my students the ability to wiggle, move and be comfortable without distracting their classmates.
The variety of alternative seating requested in this project will help to make my classroom a more comfortable, inclusive space. Students will have the freedom to choose what type of seat works best for them, and will learn that with choice comes the responsibility to use the resource safely and correctly. These flexible seating options will help my students become more self aware and help them to learn that what they need to be as successful as possible.
