Flexibility + Choice = Focused Learning: An Equation for Success!!
My students need flexible seating options. My goal is to empower them with choices such as wobble stools, balance balls, floor seats, reading chairs, wiggle cushions and a comfy classroom rug for belly learning.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach second grade in a self-contained classroom in a small Texas school district. Many of my students come from low-income, minority, and/or single-parent homes. The truth is, daily life can be a struggle for many in our community. Those struggles became even harder this year after our small town was devastated by Hurricane Harvey. My kids didn't have much before, now many have even less. But this isn't a story about loss...it's a story about hope.
The strength, perseverance, and determination my students have exhibited in a year full of adversity is nothing less than inspiring.
In the midst of teaching them, I learn so much. Every single day I am blessed to shape, mold, and educate these remarkable pieces of the future.
My students are enthusiastic learners. They love hands-on activities and thrive in cooperative learning groups. While many do not live in literacy rich environments, they are avid readers and continually seek out opportunities to read more. They are active learners. At times, very active. And that is what has motivated me to create this project.
My Project
I have a very student-centered, global classroom. We are constantly on the go as we move around the classroom and students are expected to work both independently and in cooperative learning groups throughout the day. I recently read an article by Kayla Delzer that resonated with me. In it she states, "Outside the windows of our classroom is a dynamic, fast-paced, and ever-changing world full of choices. How can we expect our students to solve problems and make choices independently if we constantly solve their problems and make their choices for them?".
Flexible seating allows students to choose where they work and with whom and it allows students to change locations and positions within the classroom as needed.
By providing my students with a variety of seating options, such as wobble stools, reading chairs, wiggle cushions, balance balls, floor seats and rugs, they will be empowered with choice and some control over their learning environment. I believe this will dramatically improve their focus, engagement and success in the classroom!
