My students are eager to learn everyday. They come to school excited and happy every day. We are a low-income, higher poverty school district. Our classroom goal is to build a community of love, acceptance, and tolerance for everyone where we can have meaningful learning experiences.
Flexible seating will help my students stay on task, be better communicators, and collaborators.
A flexible classroom promotes a less teacher-centered area and more student-centered room. It creates an open learning environment and encourages those students who struggle staying focused because they can't stay still. Having flexible seating options allows the children to stay on task and be successful.
Oskar Cymerman in a Teaching Channel post stated "I’ve become convinced that traditional educational settings dull the senses. We know that breaks and interruptions after periods of focused activity actually help in learning, yet we ask our students to sit still for an hour or more with little freedom of movement….I’ve come to the conclusion that desks promote compliance, while coffee shop-style seating encourages community-building through increased and intentional emphasis on communication and collaboration."
My Project
I am requesting four Kore Active Teen Wobble Stools, Bouncy Bands, and four Stability Balls. All students want to do well and be successful in the classroom. However, many students have trouble focusing because they have trouble sitting still. These items will allow the children to both sit and be active in movement at the same time without interfering with instruction or being disruptive. The intended application of these appliances is to allow and promote physical movement while conferencing and collaborating with both peers and teachers. Students are engaged in learning and lessons while being able to release their physical energy.
All children are candidates for greatness.
Flexible seating options will help instill that belief in my students through their success in that type of environment.
Giving students the option of coffee shop environment seating where they can choose to sit in traditional seating, bounce, stand, or wiggle while at the same time still being engaged in learning will result in fostering their creativity and problem solving. It is my goal to provide these tools and provide a student centered classroom. Flexible seating improves student learning and gives students every possible advantage in being successful in the classroom.
