I teach in a low-income, high poverty school district in a rural area. Many of my students' lives are challenging outside of the classroom so I work hard to provide them with a safe nurturing environment inside the classroom. My students have a strong desire to learn and deserve to have access to current materials and tools to help them be successful.
My students are bright, inquisitive, and creative.
They enjoy singing, reading, writing books, doing research, playing math games, and having class discussions. Many of my students are being raised in single-parent households or by other family members, and most receive a free or reduced price lunch. These things may make it difficult for them to get ahead early in life and they may not have the life experiences many of us see as "typical."
The moment they walk into my classroom it is my responsibility to make sure each child is getting what they need to grow and reach their potential. First grade is a pivotal time and it is my job to foster a love of learning and cultivate a strong work ethic and perseverance. I work hard to provide a comfortable homey environment to maximize learning.
My Project
My students are all different. They have different personalities and interests and come in different shapes and sizes. However, my chairs are all the same height and shape.
Last year I purchased scoops and cushions to give my students options for independent reading.
The results were quite positive and now I would like to bring seating choices to the work tables. I would like to provide the following seating options for my students: fidget bands for my chairs so children can allow their feet to fidget when they don't touch the ground, yoga balls for working at the standard tables and stability cushions for working at the lowered tables.
When I read at home, I never choose to do so in a hard straight back chair. I find the most comfortable spot so I can focus on my reading. I want to provide comfortable choices for my students so they are free to focus on their learning. Research shows that allowing students choice in their seating can improve test scores, improve ability to focus and decrease distracting behaviors.
