This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
In the heart of Houston's Fifth Ward is where my students and their families reside. A community full of rich culture and pride that often goes unappreciated and overlooked. A community in which poverty affects the majority of the families that I serve, yet, my students come into my classroom smiling and ready to learn on a daily basis.
While Hurricane Harvey may have impacted our ability to have basic materials and resources my scholars continue to work extremely hard to break the cycle of poverty that they are currently a part of.
Each of my scholars understand the importance of their education and how it can unlock the doors to their aspirations and dreams.
My students are driven, hardworking, and persevering kids who are developing oral language skills, reading comprehension strategies, and mastering their social emotional development. They are inspiring because they always work with the end in mind and are always seeking ways to master their goals. Given the pre-set trajectory of their lives; they are knocking down barriers and working toward a strong academic career.
My Project
Let's face it, times have changed. No longer are students learning with traditional desks and chairs. Classrooms are beginning to look and feel different; and I want my classroom to mirror these productive changes. After testing some flexible seating options in my classroom, and witnessing students learn better and choose learning seating that benefits their learning style I want to expand this experience for my scholars.
Flexible seating encourages students to make decisions that benefit their learning style the most.
Some students prefer pillows or a rocking chair while working and other students prefer using lap desks. Whatever they decide, I want to have the resources available to them to own their learning and development. These materials collectively will work to increase their critical thinking skills, decision making skills, and abilities to collaborate with others. All skills are necessary for success within their academic journeys.
