The students in my classroom are students with learning and emotional disabilities.
Many of them have experienced trauma in their lives and have difficulty coming to school.
Our classes serve students with a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder and specific learning disabilities. The typical student in my class reads at a fourth-grade level, with some students reading at a second-grade level, and many struggle with basic phonics and writing skills.
The opportunity and achievement gaps are apparent among our student population. All of my students receive free breakfast and lunch. We are a Title I neighborhood school. The majority of my students do not have computers at home, and some do not have access to the internet. My students go home each day and struggle to help their parents provide for their families.
My students deserve access to seating in the classroom that does not break every time they move.
Currently, the chairs in my classroom break easily and my students are constantly sitting in areas that they are not comfortable in.
My students cannot learn effectively when all they can focus on is if they move the wrong way the chair will break and how uncomfortable they are. I would like to create enough seating options that students can sit in a comfortable environment and be able to focus on their learning in more productive manners. By having access to more comfortable seating, students can bring a good book to their favorite area and comfortably read. This will help them develop a love of reading because if they feel good in the environment that they are in, then they will begin to associate good feelings with the books they are reading!
