My school is made up of a variety of different socio-economic backgrounds, because of this it also transfers into the classroom. My classroom is made up of a diverse group of academic levels, as I teach a fifth grade inclusion classroom. This means I have regular education students and special education students in one room, all day.
Through my years of experience, I have learned that all students wish to move, collaborate, and be engaged in critical thinking.
It is my obligation, as the teacher, to facilitate these experiences and provide my students with a meaningful education. My students are faced with many challenges both in an out of the classroom and I only hope that when they are with me, I can provide them all the tools they need to be successful.
My Project
Two years ago I started the year with a fully funded project. So, we were able to start the school year using flexible seating in my classroom. This was a huge success because my students loved having different options to choose from. We had wobble stools, camp chairs, carpet squares, a futon, lap desks, a bench and hightop seating.
Flexible seating not only aided in my students learning but it created such an amazing classroom community and gave each student ownership over our unique classroom.
After 2 years and moving from 1st grade to 5th grade some of my seating is currently inappropriate for the grade level and some of the seating options have been worn out or broken. I would like to add taller wobble seats to our classroom, stools, new exercise balls for our ball chairs, and a few other items.
