My second graders are an energetic, creative, and active group who love to move about throughout the day. More than a third of my students come from low-income households. Several students have Individualized Educational Plans, IEPs or 504s. Several others have diagnosed Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.
To meet the needs of these students, I would like to create flexible seating spaces in the classroom so they have options for the many activities throughout a school day.
Students will have many learning choice options, but currently, there is only one type of plastic school chair or the floor space available for working in spaces other than at student desks. Please consider making a donation to support my wonderful students. They will be thrilled to have this seating as an option.
My Project
Flexible seating allows students to make their own seat choices independently of the teacher. My students in the past only had options of the floor or their desk, but with this flexible seating, they have many more options from which to choose. I have tables and clipboards already available for them to use in conjunction with this seating. My goal is for students to be comfortable while completing independent work and to make group work easier as well.
My students are less disruptive of their peers and stay more engaged when given choices for their learning.
Flexible seating will add to this engagement and give options other than their traditional desks and chairs. The wobble stools are adjustable and can easily be moved from place to place. The floor seats provide back support for students working on the floor, and the flex-space lounge and learn chairs give options for multiple students to use during group work. The bouncy ball seats are also easily moved around the room depending on the students' task at hand.
I am excited to make all of this available to my students.
